It certainly...takes some u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/actioncookbook\/status\/1270042966338519041?lang=enhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/DBGerrard\/status\/1270134800519700481\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eexplainingu003C\/au003E.  u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003ETo do just that, museums and cultural institutions around the country have been documenting these quotidian symbols of the coronavirus and activism. At first, these collections centered largely on the artifacts and private moments that symbolized an era of social distancing \u2014 face masks, Zoom lessons, lawn party attendees u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gary_mccabe_\/status\/1240052339962191875\" target=\"_blank\"u003Estanding six feet apartu003C\/au003E. Beginning in late May, though, people across the country marched in the streets following the horrific police killing of Gu003Ca href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/justice-for-george-floyd-minneapolis-support-protesters\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eeorge Floydu003C\/au003E to protest the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/what-is-systemic-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003Esystemic racismu003C\/au003E endangering and disenfranchising Black Americans. The u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/protests-globe-black-lives-matter-george-floyd\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eprotestsu003C\/au003E became part of the overall coronavirus narrative, which had already exposed structural inequalities that left u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/05\/health\/coronavirus-african-americans-study\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"u003EBlack Americans more susceptible to COVID-19u003C\/au003E. Together, coronavirus and the protests painted a portrait of a country gripped with inequality. u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003EOf course, these protests are u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AzhaelaH\/status\/1279805152246083584\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eongoingu003C\/au003E, and so is the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/04\/florida-reports-more-than-11000-new-coronavirus-cases-another-daily-record.html\" target=\"_blank\"u003Ecoronavirus' spreadu003C\/au003E. u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003EMuseums and other cultural institutions are capturing history in the present. They're deciding what \u2014 and who \u2014 is important during this historic time. And they\u2019re doing so as America reckons with its response to painful historic markers. u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003EPeople have toppled u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dkz0zjZG7qQ\" target=\"_blank\"u003EConfederate statuesu003C\/au003E, updated u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/mississippi-removing-confederate-symbol-flag\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eflagsu003C\/au003E with Confederate symbols and u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/think\/opinion\/chicks-march-march-reintroduces-post-dixie-trio-it-s-about-ncna1232439\" target=\"_blank\"u003Erenamed bandsu003C\/au003E. Critics have long condemned historians for forgetting the oppressed in a rush to memorialize the powerful. Museums aren't immune from this critique either: With u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/mellon.org\/news-blog\/articles\/art-museum-staff-demographic-survey-2018\/#:~:text=The%20report%2C%20published%20in%202015,people%20of%20color%3B%20people%20holding\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eoverwhelmingly white leadershipu003C\/au003E within the museum world, many museums have been u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/art-workers-systemic-racism-open-letters-1202691764\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003Ecriticized for erasing people of coloru003C\/au003E from the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/02\/arts\/design\/guggenheim-investigation-racism.html\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eexhibits they stageu003C\/au003E, the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/11\/museums-must-attract-diverse-visitors-or-risk-irrelevance\/433347\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003Ecrowds they drawu003C\/au003E, or their u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/pavpkn\/to-fight-racism-within-museums-they-need-to-stop-acting-like-theyre-neutral\" target=\"_blank\"u003Ehiring and payment practicesu003C\/au003E.u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003ETo do right in the future, we need to remember the past \u2014 and present \u2014 accurately. Instead, most museums and cultural institutions are remotely engaging in what's known as rapid response collecting. u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003Eu003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/content\/articles\/r\/rapid-response-collecting\/\"u003ERapid response collectingu003C\/au003E, in the museum world, refers to the collection of present-day items that will one day serve as historical relics. Because curators can\u2019t collect in person, they\u2019re primarily soliciting digital images of artifacts, with most setting up some kind of online portal for submissions. The specifics of what\u2019s being collected varies slightly from museum to museum, but many are focusing on images of things like masks or protest signs, as well as pictures of scenes emblematic of the current moment. u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003EHow materials are collected matters just as much as what is being collected in terms of inclusivity. To get a sense of how and what museums are collecting, Mashable spoke with curators and directors organizing collections at the Smithsonian\u2019s u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003ENational Museum of African American History and Cultureu003C\/au003E (NMAAHC) and u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/anacostia.si.edu\/collection\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003EAnacostia Community Museumu003C\/au003E, the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.lapl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003ELos Angeles Public Libraryu003C\/au003E, the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.mcny.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003EMuseum of the City of New Yorku003C\/au003E, and the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshistory.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"u003ENational Women's History Museumu003C\/au003E.u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003EThe NMAAHC, for instance, reached out to 400 organizations and people it has relationships with to collect materials, which focus on the Black experience in the U.S. Curators are asking people to share stories about their social experiences throughout the pandemic. The stories of Black Americans \u201cover centuries have been ignored or muted,\" Bill Pretzer, a curator for the NMAAHC, says, noting that the museum's very existence addresses this.u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003ECurators have also put together a u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/nmaahc.si.edu\/donate-item\" target=\"_blank\"u003Ecommunity curation websiteu003C\/au003E, which people register for, in order to collect images of things like Black Lives Matter printed masks, protest signs, written stories, or uploaded journal entries. (Others, like the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.lapl.org\/safer-archive\" target=\"_blank\"u003ELos Angeles Public Libraryu003C\/au003E and the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/anacostia.si.edu\/collection\/moments-resilience\" target=\"_blank\"u003EAnacostia Community Museumu003C\/au003E, have similar online portals.) u003C\/pu003Eu003Cpu003EAt the u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.mcny.org\/nyresponds\" target=\"_blank\"u003EMuseum of the City of New Yorku003C\/au003E, Sean Corcoran, the head of prints and photography for the museum, and his team have added another approach. Using the hashtags u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MuseumofCityNY\/status\/1278096984776347649\" target=\"_blank\"u003E#CovidStoriesNYCu003C\/au003E and #ActivistNY, they\u2019ve asked people to upload pictures on social media, which Corcoran and his team then comb through. For now, select images submitted to #CovidStoriesNYC will be reposted on the museum's social media channels and its u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.mcny.org\/covidstoriesnyc\" target=\"_blank\"u003Ewebsiteu003C\/au003E, while the images submitted to #ActivistNY are being uploaded to the museum's u003Ca href=\"https:\/\/www.mcny.org\/exhibition\/activist-new-york\" target=\"_blank\"u003Eongoing (and currently digital) collectionu003C\/au003E of the same name. He's found, thus far, that using hashtags allows for a broad interpretation for what can be submitted, which he says welcomes a wide variety of voices and stories.
